VeriSign will install in Brazil new root server for .COM and .NET

Company report shows Latin America to be fastest growing internet region in the world with 19% increase in internet usage last year.

VeriSign logoVeriSign announced that it will place a new Internet server for .COM and .NET in Sao Paulo, Brazil this year to provide Internet users throughout Latin America with enhanced Internet connections, greater security and increased reliability for .COM and .NET commerce and communications.

Following its announcement last week that it will continue to enhance the underlying Internet infrastructure for .COM and .NET by targeting regions of emerging growth, VeriSign said today that its new Internet resolution server in Sao Paulo will be operational by the end of June 2005.

In addition to operating a constellation of 18 Internet servers around the world that monitor and “mirror” the world’s Internet traffic for .COM and .NET, VeriSign’s new server in Brazil will provide better connection speeds, enhanced security and greater reliability of Internet services for the more than 22 million Internet users in Brazil and the more than 58 million total Internet users in Latin America.

VeriSign is also meeting with Brazilian Domain Name Registrars and key Internet Industry leaders this week in Sao Paulo during its Latin America Domain Name Forum. Additionally, VeriSign released a regional report on Domain Name Activity in Latin America today, which indicates that Latin America is the fastest growing region in the world for Internet usage. According to the report, the total number of Internet users in Central and South America has nearly doubled in the past three years from 32 million in 2002 to more than 58 million in 2005.

Brazil, alone, already has more than 22 million regular Internet users today and tremendous growth potential as that total represents only 12% of Brazil’s overall population. As the report also notes, Brazil leads Latin America in the number of domain registrations with 834,000, followed by Argentina with 791,000, Mexico with 256,000 and Chile with 133,000.

According to VeriSign’s research, the top factor driving Internet usage is connectivity-the ability to easily access the Internet at adequate speeds from enough convenient locations. In Latin America, the Internet continues to help bridge the “digital divide” for consumers without access to wired telecommunications infrastructure and those who can’t afford broadband services in their homes. Internet access points at places of employment, cyber cafes, and public access points such as libraries have contributed to greater Internet usage, but improvements in the underlying Internet infrastructure supporting these access points will provide greater security and stability for Latin America’s Internet users.

In addition to installing and operating a regional resolution server in Sao Paulo, VeriSign plans to support this burgeoning Internet activity by committing engineering and financial resources to further the adoption of .COM and .NET Domain Names. Accordingly, VeriSign offers internationalized domain names (IDNs) in Brazil and throughout Latin America, which allow Internet users to maintain their own national identity.

VeriSign’s regional resolution server in Brazil represents the second of 14 additional regional servers planned for areas around the world. Other planned locations included South Africa, India, Middle East, Australia, and Singapore.
