The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has announced that they have finally approved the .XXX based domain name conventions for pornographic web sites.

ICANN logoThe Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced that they have finally approved the .XXX based domain name conventions for pornographic web sites. They would soon begin their talks with the ICM Registry Inc., run by British businessperson Stuart Lawley to clarify the remaining issues about this topic.

.XXX will be a sponsored TLD specifically for adult oriented websites willing to adhere to a set of industry best practices. Among other things, creation of a top level domain for adult websites will help protect children from exposure to online pornography and also have a positive impact on online adult entertainment through voluntary efforts of the industry.

An international cross-section of the responsible online adult-entertainment industry has expressed its support for the new TLD and indicated its willingness to work through the International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR), the Canadian non-profit, multi-stakeholder organization that is sponsoring the TLD to combat child pornography and to regularize business processes and to ensure that children and others who do not wish to access adult entertainment online can easily avoid it.

Online websites dealing in adult material are worth around USD 12 Billion and they would be soon able to purchase their choice of .XXX domains. One of the expectations is that they would be available as early as this fall or winter. Much of it depends upon the plans being rolled out by ICM Registry Inc.

The authority just recently approved the .POST and .TRAVEL based domain names. .XXX was just another of the 10 extensions under considering for quite sometime by the ICANN. ICM plans to sell these domain names for as much as USD 60 a year. They also have concrete plans to prevent children from accessing these sites, as it would be now easier for filtering software to block these types of websites.

However, it all depends upon how many adult website companies move from the regular domain names to the .XXX domain names, which would be costing around 6 times the conventional domains.

ICANN has also recently entered into commercial and technical negotiations with the following additional candidate registries, .CAT, .POST and .MOBI.
