ENUM technology to integrate telephone with DNS
ENUM enables mapping of public telephone number address space into the Domain Name System (DNS).
AT&T, MCI, SBC Laboratories, Sprint, Verizon and GoDaddy.com on Friday announced to create a single company ENUM LLC to promote the idea of ENUM technology in North America, including the US, Canada and Caribbean nations.
ENUM is standardized by the IETF and enables mapping of public telephone number address space into the Domain Name System (DNS). The firms hope that ENUM will be widely adopted and allow a tight integration of VoIP to use existing and create new Internet features. For example, consumers will be able to use their telephone number to access a range of communication services which could result in a consolidation of multiple phone numbers and email addresses. An ENUM-enabled device also would allow users to contact other users and immediately see what communications options, such as voice, fax, or e-mail, can be accepted by the recipient.
The companies did not say when they expect ENUM to become widely available but mentioned that they believe the technology to bean important factor for the continued market growth of VoIP.
