Denic, the operator of the German Internet domain .DE, has confirmed that it is to bid to take over the running of .NET when VeriSign’s contract with the Internet Corp for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) lapses next June.

As we reported, ICANN is unlikely to pick a company that does not have the experience of running a domain of .NET’s size, currently about 4.8 million names, and that only a handful of companies have that experience.

VeriSign is of course bidding to keep the contract. The firm gets $6 a year for each .NET name under registration. Afilias, which runs .INFO and .ORG, is in the running, as is NeuLevel, which runs .BIZ.

Denic manages a little over eight million .DE names. The company is the only non-US firm to challenge VeriSign for the .NET contract. While Afilias is incorporated in Ireland, and does a lot of business in Germany, it operates primarily in the US.
