According to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), China’s domain name “.CN” had hit 402,291 by the end of August.

The number of domain names in the world has reached a record 64.5 million, averaging one for every 100 persons. China’s state-level domain name .CN has grown the fastest in the world, says Asia Times.

The total number of domain names registered in the top 20 countries in terms of GDP accounts for 86% of the world’s total domain names, with North America accounting for 31% and China, Japan and South Korea, 6%. The domain name .CN increased by 89% in 2003.

The rapid growth of domain name registration is attributable to strong Internet activities and activities by small businesses.
